Interior Architecture and Product Design 1998 Alumni Honoree [ First | Previous | Next | Last ] |
GREGORY MILLER developed an early interest in both furniture making and construction. This love of working with his hands led the Dodge City, Kansas, native to seek employment in the custom homebuilding industry directly out of high school. After five years gaining experience in all facets of construction, he developed a desire to become involved with design and construction at the decision-making level. This desire encouraged him to pursue a Bachelor of Interior Architecture at KSU. While at KSU, he gained a well-deserved reputation as an excellent designer and a tremendously talented craftsman. Miller's outstanding academic achievements were recognized by selection as the first-ever recipient of the David R. Earle Memorial Scholarship, given annually by the interior architecture program to its most deserving student. Also, the submission by Miller and veterinary medicine student Tracy Carlile to the Hill's Pet Products National Hospital Design competition in 1988 was selected to receive the first-place award. The plaque received in that competition is still proudly on display nearby the interior architecture office in Seaton Hall. Miller also received the interior architecture Outstanding Graduating Senior Award, the Student Leadership Award, and the Faculty Scholastic Award in recognition of his academic and other achievements. Upon graduation from KSU, Miller relocated to Portland Oregon, where he worked from 1988 to 1993 for McCarter Boczkaj. During this time, he continued to explore his love of furniture design at the Oregon College of Arts and Craft, both as a student and a teaching assistant, and he also developed his interest in metalworking at a local technical school. He combined his design and technical skills to create a table that, in 1992, garnered the first-place award in a juried competition of tables, lamps and chairs by the best furniture designers in the Pacific Northwest. Since 1993, Miller has been an associate at Williamson McCarter and Associates of Portland, where his diverse expertise provides him with a practical perspective unique in the design professions. His work has involved residential projects, as well as commercial ventures including libraries, museums, corporate offices and courtrooms, in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. Miller is currently utilizing his varied experiences as the Project Manager of furniture and finishes for the North Expansion of the Nike World Campus. Miller has also developed a personal clientele who call on him for both custom furniture and design consultation. He and his wife, Susan, an artist, have recently completed a building they designed and built to house Gregory's shop and Susan's studio. With its proximity to the Columbia River Gorge, living in Portland allows Miller to frequently and thoroughly enjoy his passion of windsurfing. |
