Regional and Community Planning 1998 Alumni Honoree [ First | Previous | Next | Last ] |
TAREK MONEIR has rapidly risen through the ranks to the directorship of a planning agency. Originally from Cairo, Egypt, Moneir received a Bachelor of Science in Architecture in 1982 and a Master's Degree Certificate in Architecture in 1984 from Ain-Shams University in Cairo. He also taught architecture at that school from 1982 through 1986, and during that period was employed as an architect with Kemet Design Group Consultant Office, as a junior planner with Socio-Economic and Planning Consultants, and as an architect planner for Urban Planning Development Consultants, all of Cairo. In 1986, he came to the U.S. to pursue a Master in Regional and Community Planning. While a graduate student at KSU, Moneir was a graduate teaching assistant in the architecture design systems course for third-year students, a participant in KSU's summer Community Service Program, and a research assistant in Extension Engineering. He was also an active member of the KSU student chapter of the American Planning Association and involved in many other programs and projects. KSU's planning faculty describe Moneir as a true team player as well as a good student with an inquiring mind who was eager to learn and then apply that knowledge. An advocate for professional practice, Moneir has maintained contact with the KSU planning faculty to suggest ways they in particular and KSU in general can provide assistance to small communities through research and citizen participation. After receiving his KSU degree, Moneir relocated to Johnson City, Tennessee, where he was employed from 1989 to 1992 as Urban Planner in the Planning Department, from 1992 to 1994 as Architect/Neighborhood Senior Planner in the Department of Community and Economic Development, and from 1994 to 1996 as Special Projects Manager in the Department of Administration. In 1996, Moneir was appointed as Community Development Director in Mason City, Iowa. His responsibilities include the management, operation and maintenance of five divisions (Planning, State and Federal Grants Program, Section VIII Housing Assistance Program, Economic Development, and Building Inspections Services). He also manages several State and local key economic development programs to assist new, expanding or existing businesses and industries in Mason City. Moneir has participated in many continuing education courses, served on a number of community service committees, and taught several planning courses at East Tennessee State University. He is a member of the National Council for Urban Economic Development, the American Planning Association, the International Division of Iowa Department of Economic Development, and the Professional Developers of Iowa, and an associate member of the American Institute of Architects. He and his wife, Doaa, have two daughters. |
